Superintendent of Pune Rural police, Sandeep Karnik, has directed Haveli police to file an FIR in connection with an alleged case of ragging of first-year women students of computer science at an engineering college in Narhe, in Ambegaon taluka.

Karnik acted promptly after he was informed that police personnel at the Abhiruchi police chowki, Sinhagad Road, were refusing to register a complaint from the alleged victim of the ragging. The 18-year-old girl told DNA she hails from Mumbai and that her sister had committed suicide in 2005 after facing harassment due to ragging.

The girl said the ragging by senior female students residing at the hostel happened on August 20, when the seniors called out the freshers to the corridor and “started passing vulgar comments”.

They then asked the freshers “to indulge in vulgar acts and use abusive language,” she claimed.

One of the junior girls refused to cooperate in the ragging and complained to the college rector, allegedly asked her to cooperate with the seniors.

The freshers were also made fun of for their inability to speak correct English, she said.

Karnik said the police has been directed to immediately investigate into the complaint and take action if necessary.
