While the septuagenarian Gandhian, Anna Hazare, has been busy fighting corruption, there has been a steady rise in the corruption cases in Ahmednagar district.

And the anti-corruption bureau sleuths of the state police said the awareness among the people in the district is ‘quite high’ as they have seen Anna’s crusade against corruption from close quarters.

The state government’s Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) sleuths said one of the main reasons for getting more complains against the those demanding bribes is that people are coming forward without any fear as they know that Anna is there to support them in their fight against corruption.

Statistics with the ACB Ahmednagar show corruption cases against government servants have risen from 27 in 2009 to 35 in 2010. And till August 27 this year, 14 cases have been registered with ACB.

In 2009, the ACB sleuths arrested a class one officer, five class two officers and 21 class three officials in that district.
In 2010, five class one officers, seven class two officers and 23 class three officers were arrested by the ACB.

Deputy superintendent of police (ACB) Prakash Sahane said: “An increasing number of people in Ahmednagar are approaching ACB with complains of corruption against officials. We are setting the traps after getting the complaints. In last two years we had got ample complaints from the people and after probing, we have arrested the officers,” he said.

A majority of those arrested in Ahmednagar district are either from revenue or police department. “The Ahmednagar ACB has been organising awareness camp in the district to educate the people about the need to come forward and register complains against corruption,” Sahane added.
