The Bombay high court has directed the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) to implement the recommendations made by the National Environment Engineering Research Institute (NEERI) regarding the lack of management of the dumping ground at Turbhe, leading to massive inconvenience to the public residing around it.

A division bench of Justice DD Sinha and Justice VK Tahilramani has directed the civic body to start compliance on the recommendations within two weeks and complete it by six weeks. The court has also asked them to file a report on the next date of hearing.

The directions were given during the hearing of a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) that was filed by Vasant Mhatre, a local  who claimed that the corporation has been dumping mixed garbage at the landfilling site which is surrounded by chemical factories and residential areas. A total of 50,000 people stay around the dumping ground site.

According to a report submitted by NEERI after their visit to the site in February, no buffer zone has been created and there is no fence around the site either. It should be a no development zone, but  no proper storm water drainage system was designed.

The bench said, “Considering the urgency and public health in the rainy season, the corporation should take the appropriate steps based on the recommendations immediately and remove all shortcomings in order to protect public hygiene.”

The PIL also alleged that the corporation has been negligent towards its duty and is risking the lives of the citizens.
The petitioners also cited a newspaper report which stated that workers have been shunning the place due to the rising stink around the area.

The court has now adjourned the hearing on the PIL for six weeks.
