The absence of zebra and pedestrian crossings near the historic Shaniwarwada is causing a major worry for tourists and pedestrians alike.

A 95-year-old woman, Harnabai Vishnu Shinde of Adarshnagar, Dehu Road was killed after she was knocked down by a speeding PMPML bus at the Gadgil statue chowk opposite Shaniwarwada on Thursday evening (DNA, March 19).

A few years ago, a 10-year-old schoolboy from the New English School, Ramanbaug, who was riding a bicycle, was killed in the same area when he was run over by a PMPML bus.

Nearly, 500 tourists visit the Shaniwarwada on a daily basis. The area around the Shaniwarwada does not have a single zebra crossing.

Shaniwarwada has two entrances, one on the Shivaji Road and the other on Bajirao Road. Both roads are without any zebra crossings, dividers or traffic signals.

Sandip Pokale, a tourist, told DNA on Saturday, “It is very difficult for me to cross the road though I am young. I can well imagine the plight of old people. The authorities must improve the infrastructure in the area.’’

Despite, the traffic congestion in the area, there is just one solitary traffic signal outside the Lal Mahal on Shivaji Road.

Tulshiram Shendge, a 65-year-old resident of the area said, “It is extremely difficult for old persons like me to cross the road and enter the Shaniwarwada.’’

Deputy commissioner of police (traffic) Manoj Patil told DNA, “It is the responsibility of the PMC to provide zebra crossings and pedestrian crossings especially in areas like Shaniwarwada because of the heavy tourist traffic."
