The greed to become rich overnight drove Salim Sheikh to kidnap eight-year-old Jitendra Parmar, son of businessman Narendra Parmar, who runs an imitation jewellery shop in Pimpri.

The deputy commissioner of police, Dnyneshwar Chavan, on Friday said, “Salim, a petty thief, wanted to become rich and planned the abduction along with his two friends. But we foiled his
game plan.”

Salim was produced in court, which remanded him in police custody for a week. His friends are still at large.

Jitendra was kidnapped on February 5 and two days later his father received a ransom call for Rs2 crore. Chavan said the trio abducted Jitendra while he was returning from tuition on February 5 and forced him into an Indica car.

“They covered his mouth with a handkerchief, following which the boy fainted. They panicked and waited near Nigdi for some time till the boy regained consciousness,” Chavan said. The trio kept the boy at Salim’s residence in Bijlinagar, Chinchwad, for the next two days.

After demanding the ransom, Salim asked one of his friends to stay home while he and the other friend took Jitendra to Karnataka.

“Salim’s wife was in Hubli with her mother at that time. On the way he shaved Jitendra’s head in Kolhapur so that no one would recognise him. He told his wife that he found the boy on the way and would look for his parents after a few days,” the police
officer said.

Later, Salim put up at a lodge in Laxmeshwar, Hubli, along with his wife, and Jitendra and asked his friend to return to Pune. Soon, the Pune police tracked Salim’s mobile phone and nabbed him at the lodge with the help of the Karnataka police.

Chavan appreciated ACP Sudhir Choughule, police inspector Tukaram Gaud and sub-inspector Vitthal Dalvi for their role in rescuing the boy.
