It was another hellish day for commuters, especially for those living in the central and eastern suburbs. The incessant rain have flooded tracks on the central and harbour line, disrupting rail service.

The situation on the roads was not any better with water-logging and potholes, leading to heavy traffic jams on crucial roads of the city.

In an official statement, the Central Railway (CR) said, “Due to heavy downpour, which resulted in water logging at Sion, Kurla and Chunabhatti from 6 am on Monday, the CR was running services with limited number of Siemens AC-DC rakes to avoid damage to the DC rakes.

The number of services were gradually increased as soon as the water receded. By evening, services were fully restored but they were still running behind schedule by 15-20 minutes.”

According to the CR, the Main Line was not operating between 06.30 am and noon.  The harbour line was not operational even longer; from 06.30 am to 3.20 pm.

Anuradha Tillu, a resident of Dombivli who was stuck between Vidyavihar and Ghatkopar stations for over 45 minutes, said: “Why are they not communicating the problem to us? In an emergency like this, it is essential that passengers be told about the problem so that we can make our decisions accordingly.”

While most others preferred to travel by BEST buses. Subodh Panchal, a resident of Mira Road, said:  “Today, I took the 505 limited from Bandra at 7: 45 am and reached BARC at around 7: 45 am. On my journey back home, after leaving 30 minutes early from office, I travelled in the same way.”

According to BEST spokesperson NA Walawalkar, of the 4476 buses that were supposed to ply, 3838 did.  For road commuters, water-logging at crucial junctions proved to be a nightmare.

Hindmata Junction, Milan Subway,  Andheri Subway and Malad Subway were some of the spots, which slowed down traffic for a large part of the day.
