On Thursday morning around 8000 operational staff of the cargo handling agents (CHA) at Sahar Cargo Complex (SCC) went on a 24-hour flash strike due to lack of proper infrastructure and increasing corruption.

However, the Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL) said that they have resolved the issue and work will resume work at the Cargo Complex from Friday.

The strike by operational staff of CHAs brought the work at the SCC to a standstill.

“MIAL took over Mumbai airport in 2006 and there has been a 300% increase in both import and export cargo but the infrastructure is very poor. The storage capacity is the same as it was in 1999-2000,” said a CHA, requesting anonymity.

“The existing staff has to work till 2am to 3am daily to clear the consignments because there is not enough manpower. Trucks with export consignments have to pay a bribe of Rs1,500 to 2,000 to enter the cargo on a priority basis. This definitely pushes up the transaction charges of consignments,” he adds.

“We have a meeting with MIAL and the customs commissioner (cargo) to discuss the issue. If they give us time bound assurances to improve the infrastructure we will cancel the strike,” he said. When contacted the spokesperson for MIAL said that matter has been resolved.

“We have improved the infrastructure. We are working on a master plan to develop a next-generation cargo complex which will help us handle more capacity of 1 million tonnes annually,” he said.
