Students of a civic school in Worli were in for a shock on Friday morning when the school handed out their leaving certificates.

Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar School, suddenly announced that they were shutting down the eighth standard (English medium) they had started this year as they had not received the necessary approval from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

Around 53 students of that class were asked to seek admission elsewhere. The parents had a meeting with the school authorities demanding that the students be transferred to another school.

"How can the school suddenly declare that it's closing down its section in the middle of the academic year?'' lamented a parent.
The parents were furious because they alleged that the school had not given any prior notice before this drastic action. On parent said, "If the school had at least warned us before we would have made alternative arrangements for our children."

The parents met the school authorities demanding that they transfer their children directly to another civic school near Worli Sea Face or near Nana Chowk. Another parents stated, "Most of the students hail from an underprivileged class. We cannot afford to pay donations and get our children admitted elsewhere.''

"We were forced to shut the eighth standard since the BMC did not give us approval. We are in talks with the BMC and they might take back the leaving certificates.''

The school has Marathi and English medium. The Marathi medium is till standard ten, while the English medium was only till the eight class. Last year, the school extended the English medium to standard eight.
