The investigation into the kidnapping of a five-year-old Kandivli boy has gained massive proportions. A team of more than 300 policemen from across the city have been roped in to crack the case.

The police have been forced to take this case seriously, after home minister RR Patil reportedly issued a diktat, asking them to crack the case as soon as possible.

A similar kind of zest was observed last year during the investigation of the serial rape-murder of minor girls in Nehru Nagar, Kurla (East), with the hundreds of policemen from being called up to join the investigation. Though, two of the three cases are still to be solved, the intensity and alertness of the police managed to put a stop to any such cases.

On April 6, five-year-old Karnit Shah, the son of a wealthy stock broker went missing from outside his Mahaveer Nagar home. Twelve days have passed but the police have not been able to trace the child or his possible kidnappers. The situation is trickier as his family have not received any ransom call yet. A man in his thirties identified as Sunny, who frequented the area is said to the main suspect and efforts are on zero in on him.

The officials said that a team is being hand-picked by senior officials, who are choosing some of the best investigating officers and support staff.

“We have been asked to focus only on this case and nothing else. The case is sensitive and important as it involves a kid, “said an officer, who is part of the team.

The officials said that sub-teams have been formed to investigate various aspects of the investigation.

For example a team has been specially been going through the list of criminals and gangs that kidnap kids and force them to beg. Another team is visiting tantriks and black magician, incognito, to find out if anyone had approached them for sacrificing a child. Yet another team is meeting with the friends, relatives, business associates, colleagues, neighbours and others to get as much information as possible to crack the case.

The cops are also working on the possibility that the child could have been murdered and efforts are on to search isolated locations where he could have been dumped by the accused. “We are looking at all the possibilities and are leaving no stone unturned to trace the child,” said police inspector A Chavan of the Kandivli police station.
