The recent rains in the catchment areas have increased the levels of Tulsi, Modak Sagar, Tansa, Vihar and Upper Vaitarna such that they have almost reached their overflow mark. According to the data available with the BMC, the total useful content of the lakes supplying water to the city is 8,66,439 million litres.
Modak Sagar and Tulsi have already started to overflow. The other three will start to overflow soon. Tansa and Vihar are one meter away from their maximum level, while Upper Vaitarna is three meters away. “If it continues to rain for next week, these lakes would also start to overflow,” said an official from the hydraulic department.
“The lake level is rising continuously in the last few days. Tulsi and Vihar lakes are near to overflow,” said Ramesh Bamble, chief hydraulic engineer.
Useful content in the Bhatsa lake, which supplies about 60% water to the city, is 4,51,432 million litres.
