The Santacruz police received a call in the morning informing them about an unattended luggage bag with a dead body inside it.
Mannu Yadav, a casual labour and witness told DNA that the woman seemed to be between 30-35 years. Her mouth was gagged with a piece of cloth, and her hands and legs were tied with a rope. The body was naked, except for undergarments.
“Someone could have murdered her and dumped the body in a suitcase during the night” said Yadav.
Preliminary medical investigations at Cooper hospital, Juhu, suggest strangulation as a possible cause of death, as ligature marks were found around her neck.
“Our priority is to investigate the identity of the person. Only after that we will be in a position to trace the culprit and establish the reason behind the murder” said Madhukar Chaudharie, senior police inspector, Santacruz police station.
The fact that the body was found in close proximity to a police chowki, and yet the police were unaware about it, has baffled the locals.
“What’s the use of a police chowki? Instead of remaining alert, the cops simply use the chowki as a sleeping room,” said a local.
Initiating the investigation, the police have asked all the neighbouring police stations to help them with a list of missing persons with similar features and in the same age bracket.
So far, more then three persons have come forward to identify the victim, but without any result, said police officials involved with the case.
The locals maintain that the area where the body was discovered turns isolated after 11pm. There are two movables toilets placed there by the civic authorities for the local fishing community nearby.
