The crime branch has rescued an 11-year-old girl who was kidnapped from her Dindoshi residence on March 3. The kidnapper has been arrested.

According to police, complainant Abusbi Shaikhm, 65, a resident of Bacchi Nagar in Malad (E), filed a complaint with the Dindoshi police stating that her granddaughter had been kidnapped while she was playing in the neighbourhood.

The Kandivli unit of the Crime Branch was making parallel inquiries into the case. “It was learnt that one Sanjay Shreepat Sukam, 21, who stays in the same area, has also been missing since the day the girl was kidnapped. We mobilised our informers and gave them descriptions of the girl and Sukam,” said police inspector Raghunath Dalvi.

On Monday, senior inspector Feroz Patel received information that the girl and the accused were spotted in the Ambuj Wadi area of Malwani. Accordingly, a team was formed and Sukam was apprehended. “He confessed that he had kidnapped the girl,” said police constable Ketan Ghadge.

The accused and the victim were then handed over to Dindoshi police for further inquiries. The police said Sukam had earlier been involved in a case of assault and robbery in Jogeshwari.

“We have sent the victim for medical examination to ascertain whether she had been raped. If the results are positive, then Sukam will be charged with rape of a minor girl,” said a police official, requesting anonymity.
