1,000 crank calls a day for Pune police

Assistant commissioner of police (operations), Rajkumar Shinde, said on Wednesday that the police control room (phone number 100) has been receiving more than 1,000 crank calls every day.

The Pune police control room is being inundated with more than 1,000 crank calls every day. Assistant commissioner of police (operations), Rajkumar Shinde, told DNA on Wednesday that the police control room (phone number 100) has been receiving more than 1,000 crank calls every day.

“We have  summoned some of these people to the Pune police commissionerate and warned them,” Shinde said.  According to Shinde, a few months ago, the Hadapsar police had booked a person for making a bomb hoax call and two persons who had made calls to the police control room 48 times in one day.

The toll free ‘100’ phone number has been established for people to inform the police of any untoward incidents in the city.
Shinde said that the Pune police control room received 10,000 calls on a daily basis. In the month of July alone, the control room had received 3.06 lakh calls from the people of which 35,597 calls were crank calls.

According to Shinde, notices had been sent to 229 people and 108 people had been summoned to the commissioner’s office. “These crank calls are wasting the time of the police and affecting the working of the control room,” Shinde said.
