The Shiv Sena wants the golden glow at Marine Drive back before the iconic sea facing stretch turns 100. Avkash Jadhav — a nominated Sena corporator — has written to BMC chief Ajoy Mehta requesting him to ensure that all the white LED lights at Marine Drive are replaced with yellow LED lights before the promenade turns 100 on December 16 later this month.
"LED lights were changed from white to yellow on a trial basis. Since then there has been no plan to get the entire promenade fitted with yellow lights. What is the BMC waiting for? The golden glow of the Queen's Necklace should be returned before the promenade completes 100 years," said Jadhav.

After the High Court asked the BMC to install yellow lights at Marine Drive, EESL conducted an experiment with yellow lights. Yellow LED bulbs were installed on 16 of the 644 lamps at the NCPA end of Marine Drive to see if the illumination matches with the golden glow of the old lamps.
Jadhav had complained to the heritage panel over the new lighting scheme. The MHCC had in February written to the BMC asking it to change the lighting scheme at Marine Drive to either golden or yellow. However, with the BMC not taking any action the HC weighed in on the issue and suggested bringing back sodium vapour lamps.
Officials said that the BMC would soon inform EESL and ask it to install yellow LEDs. The Marine Drive promenade which was called the Kennedy Sea Face is now called Netaji Subhashchandra Bose Marg. Work on it commenced 18th December, 1915 and was completed in 1920.
