Rains to lash city for 5 more days: IMD

In just 24 hours, Colaba recorded 64.4 mm while Santa Cruz experienced 57.1 mm of rainfall; many areas saw waterlogging

Even as Mumbai experienced a wet and overcast Monday, weathermen claimed that Mumbaikars will have to hold on to their umbrella's for the next five days as the city is likely to experience heavy to very heavy rains.

On Monday from 8.30 am to 8.30 pm Colaba experienced 48.6 mm rainfall while Santacruz recorded 126.6 mm rains. Infact in a period of 24 hours between Sunday 8.30 am to Monday 8.30 am Colaba recorded 64.4 mm while Santacruz experienced 57.1 mm of rainfall respectively.

Calling the current weather system as active monsoon phase, KS Hosalikar, Deputy Director General (DDG), Western region, India Meteorological Department (IMD) said that at the moment there is widespread rainfall at several locations across the State including Konkan, Marathwada and other places that are witnessing heavy to very heavy rainfall. "The heavy rainfall being witnessed is due to two reasons including an offshore trough from Maharashtra coast to Kerala as well as a low pressure area at Bay of Bengal. As per forecast there will be heavy to very heavy rainfall at various parts of the state including Mumbai for the next five days," he said adding that the coastal belt was to see heavy rainfall.

Many locations in the city witnessed water logging on Monday after continuos rainfall throughout the day. Areas like Kings Circle, Milan Subway, Kamani, Bail Bazaar and Khar West, Juhu Tara Road and area near National college Bandra witnessed water logging in the evening. BEST bus routes were also diverted and there were traffic congestions at various locations. Andheri Subway was closed for 30 minutes.

On an average during monsoon- from June to September the weather station at Colaba receives around 2000 mm of rainfall while the Santacruz weather station receives around 2200mm of rainfall. Infact as per officials from IMD Mumbai while Santacruz has already recorded 941.4 mm of rainfall so far Colaba has received around 730.1 mm till date.
