An activist of the Peasants and Workers Party (PWP), which recently lost the Kharghar gram panchayat elections, has been arrested by the police for allegedly assaulting two of his neighbours and damaging their car.

According to the police, Kailash Mhatre, 38, a resident of Owe village in Kharghar and a few of his accomplices attacked Mahesh Bhoir’s car that was parked in front the latter’s house. They broke all the windows of the car with some bricks.

“After damaging the car, they entered Bhoir’s residence and started assaulting him and his uncle. While Bhoir, 18, escaped unhurt in the attack, his uncle suffered severe injuries and is now recuperating at a city hospital,” said SM Jadhav, assistant police inspector from Kharghar police station.

Explaining the motive behind the attack, Jadhav said, “Bhoir, a college student, also works for another political party and Mhatre thinks that he was behind his defeat in the recent elections. Therefore, he took some more people with him and attacked the Bhoirs. We are now searching the other accused who were also involved in the crime,” Jadhav said.

The police have booked the accused under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code. He was produced before the judicial court on Wednesday afternoon.
