While the rest of Thane has taken up brooms and paint brushes to clean and beautify the city, the residents of Mumbra resorted to a unique tactic to clean the garbage on their streets. They threw garbage in front of the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) ward office on Wednesday morning in protest of the civic body not picking up garbage for the past one week.

“Since the past five days, the TMC has not picked up garbage from Mumbra.  Around 500 tonnes of garbage from schools, colleges, hospitals, residential areas is lying in and around Mumbra,” says NCP corporator Ashraf Shanu Pathan from Amrutnagar and also the president of the ward committee.

The residents led by NCP members Sakib Date, Pathan and others reached the TMC office at MM Valley, Shimla park, Mumbra at 12 noon and unloaded garbage in front of the office. “They say that the Diva dumping ground is closed and hence, they are not picking up our garbage.  If that is the case then how come Thane’s garbage is picked up daily. This is step-motherly treatment for residents of Mumbra,” he said.

When DNA contacted TMC, they said that the garbage was not being picked up because the dumping ground at Diva had been closed by MNS (Maharashtra Navnirman Sena) members who are opposing dumping over there. “These people want us to pick up the garbage while MNS people are not letting us dump it in Diva. Where are we supposed to unload the garbage?” asks a senior TMC official from Mumbra ward office.  “We have started lifting the garbage from today.  But this is more of a political stunt due to upcoming civic elections in March 2017,” he says.
