Mumbai-based Myna Mahila Foundation, which works for women in slum pockets, is among seven charities that have been backed by Britain's Prince Harry and his fiancee Meghan Markle. The couple have appealed to those who wanted to send them presents for their wedding to support the NGOs instead.

Harry's office released a statement on Monday saying the couple were "incredibly" grateful for the goodwill they had been shown and "are keen that as many people as possible benefit from this generosity of spirit". It reads, "The couple have therefore asked that anyone who might wish to mark the occasion considers making a donation to charity, rather than sending a wedding gift."

Founded in 2015 by Suhani Jalota, Myna Mahila Foundation works for women in various slum colonies across Mumbai. Last January, Meghan Markle had visited the NGO during a trip to India when, Suhani says, their association with the royal family began.

"I had met her once in the US and her office later contacted us while she was in Mumbai. Ours is a grassroots level organisation and she was happy to see the work that we were doing in a small yet meaningful way. We are extremely happy to be featured among the seven charities world over," Jalota told DNA.

The non-profit, which has its base in Govandi, raises awareness of menstrual hygiene, health, nutrition and other similar issues among slum women. Jalota said, "The idea is to help women speak for themselves and about their issues even in the tough situations that they live in. With the recent announcement, we are hoping to reach more and more women for the cause that is so important."

The chosen ones

Prince Harry and actor Meghan Markle, who will marry at Windsor Castle on May 19, have urged people to donate to these charities: Chiva (Children's HIV Association); Crisis; the Myna Mahila Foundation; Scotty's Little Soldiers – a charity for bereaved armed forces children; StreetGames; Surfers Against Sewage; and The Wilderness Foundation UK.
