Services of the Versova-Ghatkopar Metro-1 were delayed by five to 10 minutes as a Versova-bound Metro train came to its halt near the Jagruti Nagar Metro station due to a bird hit incident that was reported on Saturday afternoon.

Following this, passengers were safely evacuated at the Jagruti Nagar Metro station. The inconvenience was caused after a bird hit the overhead equipment (OHE) wires. The incident occurred at 3.07 pm between Ghatkopar and Jagruti Nagar Metro stations. After due evacuation, the Metro train was sent to its depot at DN Nagar for further checking.

The operator, Reliance Infrastructure-led Mumbai Metro One Private Limited (MMOPL) in a statement said, "Due to a bird-hit, the OHE between Ghatkopar and Jagruti Nagar was impacted and a Versova-bound train came to a temporary halt at 3.07 pm."

The statement added, "As a precautionary measure, commuters were safely evacuated at the Jagruti Nagar station and the train was taken out of service for inspection. The issue has been resolved now, and services are back to normal."

The services of Metro-1 have been affected several times in the past after birds snapped the overhead wires that supply power to the rolling stock. "Anti-bird devices/ methods maybe developed and implemented on experimental basis," one of the suggestions given to the MMOPL by an Independent Engineer of Metro-1 read.

However, in one such case on February 23, 2017, 38 Metro services were cancelled and two were delayed after overhead wires broke down near the Azad Nagar Metro station. "The overhead wires were snapped by birds. An interruption between the return conductor and the anti-creep wire had resulted in parting of both the conductors," the monthly report prepared by Independent Engineer in March 2017, read.
