In order to cater to the educational needs of more cancer-afflicted children coming to Mumbai for treatment, Dhanwantari Medical Trust (DMT) will start two more centres of 'I Like School' project this year. The programme aims at keeping children with cancer in the mainstream of the education as they receive treatment away from their school. This is also to help contain dropout rate of schools in its own way.

The organization runs two projects – monthly food grain support program, and 'crafting smile' for the entertainment of these kids – by generating funds through old newspapers donated by Mumbaikars.

Dr Amol Naikwadi, a DMT volunteer, said, "Since June 2015, DMT started 'I Like School', a project of which the first centre started at Sant Gadgemaharaj Ashram, Dadar. Initially, it started with 35 children attending the class every Sunday. We are getting a very positive response to this initiative and the numbers of the children attending the class are increasing continuously."

English, drawing, and Mathematics are taught to these children every Sunday. Also DMT provides the educational material to the children during the programme.

An estimated 40,000 to 50,000 new childhood cancer cases are reported in India each year. Despite the high cure rates in developed countries, nearly 70 per cent children in India die of cancer largely due to lack of awareness, late detection and late diagnosis and inadequate facilities. Donations to DMT are exempt from income tax under section 80G. Those wishing to donate their old newspapers can contact Dr Naikwadi on 9820899797 or dhanwantari05@gmail.com.
