The Mumbai Police's anti-extortion cell on Monday arrested a man who allegedly misused the Right To Information (RTI) to demand Rs 80 lakh from a developer. The accused has been identified as 46-year-old Prashant Gudekar.
According to the police, since 2015, Gudekar had been filing complaints against a builder, who has an SRA Project in Govandi at the BMC, SRA office, and MahaRERA.

"Due to regular complaints, the builder had stopped the project work for some time. According to RERA, it was mandatory for the builder to complete the project work by April 2019, but due to Gudekar's complaints, the builder was facing hurdles in meeting the deadline," a police officer said.

The builder visited every authority where Gudekar had complained against him to put forth his side of the story. Following this, the stop-work notice issued against the builder was canceled.

"The complainant has alleged that through his contractor, Gudekar had passed on an extortion message that the builder give him Rs 80 lakh so that Gudekar would not complain against him to the government offices," the officer said.

According to the police, the complainant negotiated with Gudekar and the amount was reduced to Rs 12.50 lakh. "The complainant had also given a token of Rs 1 lakh to Gudekar. Having realised that even after paying up the money, Gudekar will continue harassing him, the complainant lodged a complaint with the crime branch," the officer said.

A police team on Monday laid a trap in a hotel at Chembur and apprehended Gudekar while he was accepting Rs 4 lakh of extortion money. "During searching Gudekar's house, we found property-related documents of various government offices. Gudekar's modus-operandi is to threaten builders by complaining against them and their projects and demand money from them," police inspector, Ajay Sawant said.
