Most cybercrime cases in Maha target women

Mumbai tops the other cities of the state in registered cases with the figure standing at 980, which is 41 per cent

Maharashtra stood first in the country where cybercrime cases targeting women were highest along with banking frauds. As per details from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), the state has the second highest cases of cybercrime registered in 2016 at 2,380 after Uttar Pradesh which has 2,639. Mumbai tops the other cities of the state in registered cases with the figure standing at 980, which is 41 per cent.

According to the statistics released by NCRB on Thursday, of the total cases registered in the state, 1,393 cases were of cheating for illegal financial gain and 500 cases of insulting the modesty of women and sexual exploitation. Statistics also revealed that there were 46 cases of extortion, 28 cases of inciting communal disharmony and 31 cases of causing disrepute in the state.

Mumbai, which stood second last year among metropolitan cities with highest cybercrimes, added one more case to reach the top tally. Bengaluru on the other hand which had 1,042 in 2015, and stood first with most cybercrime cases, came second with 762 cyber cases. Of the total cases registered in Mumbai, 711 cases alone were of cheating, illegal financial gains and credit and debit card frauds.
