Navi Mumbai crime branch has arrested a 40-year-old for allegedly kidnapping and raping a minor girl from Bangladesh on Saturday.
Munir Ghazi, a resident of Shirvane village in Nerul, had kept the 15-year-old at his residence and allegedly tortured her for around 10 days. One of his neighbours, who is also a Bangladeshi national, reportedly brought the girl from her native place and handed her over to the the accused.
That neighbour, however, went into hiding after the incident came to light and the police are on the lookout for him.
“In the wee hours of Saturday, we got to know that an unidentified girl had been locked at Munir’s residence for several days. We suspected that the girl had been kidnapped from some rural area and forced into prostitution or other antisocial activities. After getting a confirmed report, we raided Munir’s residence on Saturday morning and found the accused along with the victim,” said S Palande, assistant police inspector of Nerul police station, where the case has been registered.
The girl narrated the entire episode to the police after she was taken to the police station following which police arrested Munir.
He has been booked under sections 366A, 366B, 376 and 34 of the Indian Penal Code. “During interrogation, the victim has told us that, the nieghbour had known her for several years. After reaching his native place from India, he took her from her residence to show a new place in Bangladesh and then forcefully brought her to India. He than handed her over to Munir after reaching the city,” Palande added.
The police are, however, not sure whether the neighbour took money from Munir for providing the girl. Likewise, they are not sure if the accused were planning to sell the girl in some red-light area of Mumbai.
“Investigations are one to find out more details. Though we are not sure, the possibility of involvement of a huge prostitution racket in this case can not ignored. Munir will be in our custody till October 7. We have not found any criminal record of the accused so far,” another officer said.
