With Christmas and New Year nearing, airlines have started offering discounts on fares to attract more passengers.

Low-cost carriers like SpiceJet, IndiGo and GoAir have started rolling out discounts.

On Sunday, SpiceJet launched an offer where a person booking two tickets can avail 20 per cent discount on the base fare. However, those booking three or more seats can get a discount of 25 per cent on the base fare, states a note sent by the airline to its frequent travellers and travel agents.

Base fare is the price of a ticket excluding taxes, levies and surcharges. Therefore, base fare is much less than the final amount that a passenger actually pays for a ticket.

While GoAir is offering a discount of Rs888 on each ticket, IndiGo is offering special discounts on certain tourist destinations. National carrier Air India has started offering discounts for tickets booked through its website.

“Discounts are expected to continue to be offered by the airlines as many of them are not able to fill their seats even during the ongoing peak season. Even during Diwali, demand was not so great compared to last year, though fares were about 15-20 per cent less,” said Iqbal Mulla, president, Travel Agents Association of India (TAAI).

Narendra Kawa, an employee with a film production company who plans to visit Kolkata during the Christmas vacation, says, “Such discounts are a boon for me. Generally booking tickets for my family of four costs a bomb. Therefore, such discounts mean a lot to me.”

IndiGo website dysfunctional
Passengers of IndiGo airlines were inconvenienced on Sunday as its website remained dysfunctional due to the ongoing upgrade process. The problem is expected to last till Monday afternoon, a note on its website states. Facilities like web check-in, preferred seat selection, pre-paid meals and other services remained unavailable for most part of the day.
