To empower women by making them financially independent, the state skill development department will be holding week-long meetings from March 8 (International Women's Day) with 21 corporates who are willing to partner with the state to provide skill development to women in various fields, like driving, retail services and IT.

In partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the skill development department aims to provide training to thousands of girls across Maharashtra within the next two years.

Sources shared the department is scheduled to hold meetings with representatives of corporates, namely Ola, Uber, Volkswagon Pvt Ltd, ICICI Foundation, Tech Mahindra, Nasscom and many more. MoUs were signed between the 21 corporates and the skill development department during the recent Make in India event, said sources.

"The partnership aims to bridge the demand and supply gap of women's workforce by addressing barriers at both ends that limit women's participation in the economy. On the supply side, the project works closely with businesses to identify employment and entrepreneurship opportunities for women, and develop their skills while also looking at public-private cost-sharing models that can ensure long-term sustainability. On the demand side, the project aims to build a model for empowerment, skill development and entrepreneurship opportunities for women," said a senior government officer.

The project also aims to create a framework that brings together government partners, flagship programmes and schemes such as the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana or Deen Dayal Upadhyay Grameen Kaushalya Yojana, the business community, and a range of implementing agencies to contribute to skilling, employment and entrepreneurship of women.

"Through an integrated approach that combines skilling, job placement and enterprise start-up support, the project will promote education, skill development and employment through public-private partnerships and, in so doing, support the economic empowerment of women and girls," the officer added.

Department sources claimed that research found women to be facing significant disparities in wages across industrial sectors; women-owned businesses account for only 20% of the total registered businesses in the country.

"Creating better and wider employment opportunities for women is an important human development goal in itself and it can also have enormous growth potential for the country. Estimates from the International Monetary Fund suggest that India's GDP could expand 27% if the number of women workers increases to the same as that of men," the officer added.
