The Thane crime branch officers discuss the 16-year-old wannabe gangster in hushed tones full of hatred. Most cops want the minor to be treated as an adult offender while being charged with murder and rape of a 22-year-old engineering graduate, and say he just wanted to gain fame.
Coming from a poor family, the Class V pass teen dreamed of becoming an established goon. But they unravelled as a strong team of over 200 policemen and crime branch officers starting keeping a watch on localities of Shahad in Kalyan, nearly 46km from Mumbai. The accused and his associates – Nitin Waghe (19), Nitesh Bhoir (20) and Ravindra Waghe (20) – were soon nabbed while distributing stolen goods.
"Apparently, the 16-year-old boy became a gang leader by taking initiative while breaking into houses or attacking victims. According to sources, he did not think twice, which gave confidence to the other gang members. The gang continued with heir looting and stealing spree in and around Shahad," said a Thane crime branch officer.
"Most importantly, they chose houses in which people were present. They did not even spare the watchman and buried his corpse in the same compound. The minor always gave the first blow to the victims and was always armed with a long sword and a sickle," added the official.

Meanwhile, Thane CP Param Bir Singh said, "This would be the first instance since the amendment of the Juvenile Justice Act that we will urge the board to consider the 16-year-old an adult and seek maximum punishment, keeping in mind the crimes he has committed were cold blooded."
