The group that had sought ban on triple talaq and the one that had petitioned the court regarding the issue welcomed the government stand of differentiating triple talaq from the uniform civil code.

As per reports, the government has decided to support the ban on triple talaq, stating that it was against the Sharia and also violated the Constitutional rights. Besides, it was banned in other Islamic countries.

"I think it is a good position to take. The government has done the right thing by not clubbing the issue with uniform civil code. It was good to read about the government stand," said Feroze Mithiborelwala, who supports the ban.

"Once this issue is taken up, we will look forward to take up other issues as well. We will ask them to take into consideration codification of the personal law, so that it includes other factors, such as the age of marriage and polygamy," said Noorjehan Safia Niaz of the Bharatiya Muslim Mahila Andolan, which has sought a ban on unilateral divorce (of all kinds) and halala (the practice where a woman is expected to marry someone else first, if she wants to remarry her divorced husband).

"As of now, have we sought ban on triple talaq and halala because they are rampant in the community. We hope that the law will be codified and issues such as inheritance and other things, which are in the realm of unwritten law, will move towards becoming codified," Noorjehan said.
