A 15-year-old girl, just like her friends, has been burning the midnight oil and preparing her best for the class X board exams set to begin next month. Unlike her friends though, she is unsure if she will be allowed to appear for the examination.

The girl's parents have alleged that they were asked to shift the girl out of GD Somani School, Cuffe Parade as she had difficulties coping with the ICSE syllabus due to her learning disability. However, the girl was enrolled at the school till end of August which made her ineligible to appear as a 'private' candidate through the state board.

To ensure that the girl, who has learning disability, does not lose out on an academic year, the Maharashtra State Commission for Protection of Child Rights was to recommend that the state education board make an exception and accept her form for the class X board exam.

The commission has surpassed its seven-day deadline and yet not made the recommendation. "We have been following up with the commission every day but they haven't made the recommendation yet. They were our only hope as the state board said they could make an exception only if asked to do so," said the girl's mother.

The girl, who is now enrolled with Nalanda Foundation, a coaching institute which helps students appear for the board exam as private candidates, might not be able to appear for the internal exam set to begin on Thursday. "The teachers at Nalanda have told us that since her form has not yet been accepted, they are not sure if the examiners at the centre will conduct her exam. My assurance that she will be able to appear for the exam does not seem to work any more," said her mother.

However, the commission said that the work is in progress and the recommendation will be made. "We're working on issuing an order. It should be done by Wednesday," said an official from the child rights commission.
