Petrol and diesel will get cheaper for consumers in Maharashtra with the state specific surcharge being abolished by the Union ministry of petroleum and natural gas from Monday. Girish Bapat, Maharashtra minister for consumer protection, said this would bring down petrol prices by 60 paise per litre, while diesel will get cheaper by Rs 1.35 per litre.

This state-specific surcharge was being levied by the public sector oil marketing companies on fuels sold in the state towards the octroi levied by the BMC on crude imported at the two refineries in Mumbai. Octroi has been abolished after the GST regime came into effect.
