A Lower Parel-based Ganpati mandal has spread the message of celebrating the festival in an eco-friendly manner. What makes their theme special is their eco-friendly decorations for the eight deity idols that have been prepared by eight visually-challenged people.

Volunteers from the Panchganga Sarvajanik Utsav Mandal began decorating their idols around 9 am on August 11. They finished the work in just 24 hours. The prime focus of the theme is to save electricity.

"We used the solar power while decorating and preparing one of the idols. In another idol, we used magnets and copper wires to generate electricity. Also, while idol of the idols conveyed the message that electricity could be generated through fruits, another deity conveyed the message that electricity can be generated through water," Sumit Patil, art director of the Mandal.

Patil added that sensors were used for making two of the idols. Also, lights and music would go on and off whenever someone comes close to the idol and go away. Another idol was made using vessels.

"Even the main idol is made in an eco-friendly way with clay and paper ornaments. Our concept is to conserve electricity as conserving is equal to producing. The underprivileged people who helped us with the decoration have done a great job. Eight visually-challenged, two transgenders and two cancer patients contributed and made eight Ganesha Idols," said Patil.

Yogita Tambe, a visually-challenged teacher, who also participated while making the idols, said, "We utilised least electricity and made the idols and decorations in just 24 hours. I am visually challenged and I don't want this world to go in darkness. If society does not conserve electricity, the future is going to be dark. So, our aim was to use the least energy and utilise it properly."
