Almost nineteen days after the final date of suggestions and objection for the revised draft DP 2034 has been passed, BMC is still far from forming a planning committee to scrutinise the suggestions and objections from citizens.

While Maharashtra state director of town planning has appointed three experts, Shiv Sena and BJP is still playing politics over the appointment of three representatives on the panel.

In an order dated August 12, Maharashtra state director of town planning appointed three members on the planning committee, namely Gautam Chatterjee, retired additional chief secretary, Sudhir Ghate, retired chief engineer from BMC and Suresh V Surve, retired deputy director of town planning. This committee is also expected to have three members from the civic standing committee.

Several senior corporators in the BMC said that it is the political party leaders in the civic standing committee who would have to come to an understanding over the three members from their side on the panel. However, the confusion is that being alliance partners Sena–BJP wants to make their mark felt by being a part of the committee. Opposition Congress too has demanded to be a part of the panel.

Standing committee chairman Yashodhar Phanse said that the three names are yet to be decided. "However, the names of the members on the panel from the standing committee's side would be put before the civic house," said Phanse.

The planning committee is expected to give the several thousand suggestion/objections a hearing. A senior civic official from the DP department said, "Once the committee is finalised, in the first meeting we would be briefing them about the entire process of preparing the revised draft DP 2034. Depending on much time the planning committee wishes to allot hearings would be held accordingly."
