Some 28,000 safai karmacharis of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) who are currently residing in housing colonies meant for them are in for a major pleaser by the BJP government. Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis has announced that they would be allotted free houses in the same locality they currently reside in.

BJP MLC Vijay Bhai Girkar, through his NGO Safai Karmachari Vikas Mahasangh, organised marches, protests and public relation activities to highlight their pathetic living condition for many years.

There are 39 residential colonies in the city where the karmacharis have been staying for many generations. Girkar and Mumbai BJP president Ashish Shelar, along with other representative of the NGO, met Fadnavis at his official residence Varsha in Malabar Hill and presented the memorandum.

The CM, after going through their representation, announced an FSI of 4 for their housing colonies. This is the first time in the state that free housing has been announced for safai karmacharis.

MLC Girkar said, "Various governments have given free houses to slum dwellers. There are around 28,000 BMC safai karmacharis in Mumbai, and though they keep the entire city clean but they were ignored. Their plights were ignored. We are thankful to the CM who understood the difficulties and announced the free houses."

"The CM has won the hearts of thousands of safai karmacharis who were deprived for several years. They would work more efficiently toward a 'Swachh Mumbai'," added Girkar.

Sunil Rajaram Zode, chairman, Indian Chamber of Commerce for Affirmative Action, said, "We appreciate this move. If dreams of safai karmacharis to own a house are fulfilled by this government, then they will come closer to the BJP."

Zode also said populism is needed at the moment, and cited Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal's example. "To remain in limelight, populist steps are the need of the hour in certain classes who are really downtrodden and deprived of their legitimate rights. The recent example of Delhi is clearly visible, where Kejriwal has fulfilled his commitment of providing free water and electricity within 10 days of forming government." he said.

Sauraj Jivan Balmiki, former member, National Commission for Safai Karmacharis, said, "We initiated this move in 2013 through the centre and the with state social welfare department for providing free houses for safai karmacharis. The credit of providing free houses goes to the Congress and no other party."
