Party cadres of the Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party are overjoyed at the results of the various by-polls. According party leaders, the result in Maharashtra assembly elections scheduled for October 15 would also be on similar lines.

Ashok Chavan, who heads the Congress coordination committee for state polls, said because of BJP's flop show in the by-polls, the general perception would change. "People will be more positive towards secular parties.

There will be consolidation of secular votes. People, irrespective of their religion and caste, do not want to divide the society on communal lines. Each one wants harmony. Voters rejected the communal agenda of BJP. They had voted BJP for development, not to implement its Hindutva agenda. Modi govt has failed to meet peoples' expectations in 100 days," said Chavan.

He also said by-poll results had pushed up the morale of the party cadre, who would now give the saffron alliance a tough fight. "It'll not be a cakewalk for BJP-Sena. We will perform better in the state polls. People have realised that a BJP-led govt will not address their problems, but create more for them," Chavan added.

Nawab Malik, NCP spokesperson, told dna that there would be a neck-and-neck fight between Congress-NCP and Sena-BJP. "In LS polls, secular voters were confused and divided, and that benefited BJP. Voters will not repeat that mistake. Whenever BJP pitches for communal agenda, it has lost badly. Indian voters never like to be divided on communal lines. The by-polls results show that there is no scope for caste and religion-based politics in India," said Malik.

"BJP losing in by-polls was not limited to Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan or Gujarat. The trend was seen before in Karnataka and Bihar. It's a warning bell to Modi govt to change its strategy or face defeat in future," said advocate Mahendra Sandhansiv, a social activist.

A political observer said BJP was messing up its victory at the Centre. "People voted Modi for development. But communal forces which had lain low for the last several years, started resurfacing and harassing people. In 100 days, rather than focusing on infrastructure, these communal forces brought up 'Love Jihad', wanted saffronisation of education. Things that disturbed the society. BJP should learn from its mistakes, or else people will throw them out," he said.
