The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's (BMC) first step towards the implementation of the plastic ban is the collection of the existing plastic stored in households. After the poor response received by the collection bins placed by the civic body at several locations in the city, the BMC has now decided to rope in celebrities as brand ambassadors for awareness campaigns. After the Bombay High Court rejected to stay the implementation of the plastic ban, the municipal corporation, which is the implementing agency of the ban, is ready with a plan of action.

"There was a very poor response from the public towards deposition of plastic in the collection bins. Although the government had declared a ban on plastic use, people thought the high court may give a stay on the ban or some extension. But now that the court has ordered to implement the ban by June 23, people will rush to deposit the plastic bags and bottles in the collection bins stored with them," said Deputy Municipal Commissioner, Nidhi Choudhary.

Choudhary added that awareness is important and BMC is also in talks with celebrities to join hands for the awareness campaigns. Considering their fan following, it will prompt people to dispose of plastic and use alternatives. This is not the first time BMC is taking help of actors to promotion. Actors like Akshay Kumar and Salman Khan had joined hands with BMC for cleanliness drives.

For the disposal, BMC will start a helpline number where people can call for collection vehicle. The number may be introduced next week where people can also get locations of the plastic collection bins. There are at least 85 locations where collection bins are placed which include municipal markets and SWM chowkis.
