In August till date, there have been 994 suspected dengue cases. "Fogging activities have been carried out in more than 1,322 premises and 16,257 huts. We have conducted aedes survey in 4,873 localities and inspected as many as 2,60,001 households; 718 were found to have aedes breeding spots," said BMC pesticide officer Rajan Naringrekar.

The civic body has issued an advisory asking Mumbaikars to seek immediate medical help if they have fever. It has said that if diagnosed with dengue/malaria, one should complete the medicine course as advised by the doctor and drink plenty of liquids and take enough rest.

Dengue virus breeding spots are found in stagnant fresh water. The disease is transmitted by the bite of an aedes mosquito infected with any one of the four dengue viruses. The dengue fever is a febrile illness that affects infants, young children and adults, and occurs in tropical and sub-tropical regions of the world. Symptoms appear three to 14 days after the bite. These range from a mild fever to an incapacitating high fever, with severe headache, pain behind the eyes, muscle and joint pain, and rashes.

There are no specific antiviral medicines for dengue. It is important to maintain hydration.

Dengue haemorrhagic fever (fever, abdominal pain, vomitting, bleeding) is a potentially lethal complication, which mainly affects children. Early clinical diagnosis and careful clinical management by experienced physicians and nurses increase survival chances of patients.
