Hygiene is the most important aspect of taking care of all the Humboldt penguins.
The penguins at Byculla zoo will be getting special care right from their food, to climate control to hygiene. Special arrangements will be made in the zoo for the public viewing once they are comfortable with the new surroundings.

"There are two veterinary doctors who would take care of the aquatic birds and strict code of hygiene standards would be maintained. Everything is under supervision and as per the guidelines of the Central Zoo Authority. One who attends to the birds will have to wear apron and gloves. S/he will also have to wash his/her feet with potassium-mixed water before entering the quarantine zone," said a source.
The birds are given anti-depressant to cope with the journey and the new place. For the team, survival of all the birds is a big challenge. "Smaller ones are hand fed, bigger birds are yet to get familiar with the doctors, hence they are given fish in water itself. "There is a lab next to the big enclosure near the present enclosure where the birds are kept. In this lab their medicines, food and other requirements are kept ready," said the source.
Sources in the zoo further said that the first thing the penguins did after hopping out of the special casing was jumping in the pool and swimming. "They are given medicines on time and are comforted by experts," said another source, adding that a special team is monitoring the mammals.
Explaining the crowd-control aspect once the penguins are ready for public viewing, a senior zoo official said that special channelling would be arranged for the public and they would be able to view the penguins only through the glass wall. "No one can tease or feed the birds as the glass barriers will protect the penguins. Also, the staff will be told to ensure that visitors move through channels in discipline," said the official.
