A major fire broke out at a chemical unit at MIDC, Tarapur in Boisar on Monday. The fire led to the evacuation of adjoining units, while power supply was discontinued to avoid a major mishap. About 10 persons suffered injuries when an acid container was accidentally opened during evacuation. Eight fire tenders rushed to the spot and doused the fire.

Smoke billowing from the fire inside plant T98 of Mohini Organics, which is suspected to have originated from the unit’s chemical reactor and boilers, was visible at a 5-km radius from the plant.

“We rushed to the spot as soon as we noticed the fire. Considering it was a major explosion in the industrial compound, the neighbhouring units were asked to evacuate,” said a Boisar police officer.

“The Directorate of Industrial Safety and Health will submit a report on the incident, after which, further action will be taken,” said the officer.

KS Hegaje, Senior Inspector, said, “During the evacuation, one of the workers accidentally opened a can of acid, which led to 10 persons sustaining burn injuries. They were rushed to hospital for treatment.
