Vijay Mallya's jet sold, ripped apart to recover dues

Earlier this year, Mumbai International Airport Private Limited (MIAL) had auctioned liquor baron Vijay Mallya's 11-seater jet to recover the dues from Kingfisher Airlines.

The jet became part of United Spirits in 2005 and was one of the prized possession of Dr Vijay Mallya. It was grounded when Kingfisher Airlines faced difficulties with the upkeep of the aircraft. Silent Enterprises, based in Kurla, Mumbai, have bought the jet from MIAL after making a bid of Rs 22 Lakh. They now hope to recover the amount by ripping the plane apart and selling the parts as scrap.

The dismantling began on April 6 and will be completed in the next three days, reports Mid-Day.

Kingfisher owed Rs 53 crore in dues to MIAL. The airport seized Kingfisher Airlines' seven aircrafts when airline failed to pay the dues. In its glory days, Kingfisher used about 19,000 sq ft at the Mumbai Airport, sharing it with Air India, but later was kicked out for not being able to pay rent.
