America’s first motorcycle manufacturer, Indian Motorcycle, has finally made its way into the country with some of the most iconic cruiser bikes money can buy.
Most people in India have only heard of the Indian Motorcycle brand name thanks to the movie, “The World’s Fastest Indian”. But this iconic American bike maker has a serious cult following in the cruiser community. In fact, the company’s legacy goes far beyond the movie and in the early part of the 20th century, Indian was the largest two-wheeler maker in the world.
After falling off the radar in the post-war era, the company was recently revived after being wholly acquired by Polaris Industries, the world’s foremost manufacturer of all-terrain and off-road vehicles.
To take on modern cruiser competition, Indian developed its all-new, cutting-edge Thunderstroke 111 engine, which is a 1,819cc V-twin unit pumping out an astonishing 161Nm of torque.
And now, through its parent company, Polaris, Indian has launched its entire range in India. On the down side though, in order to handle the lower quality of fuel in the country, that crazy engine has been detuned to produce 139Nm of torque.
Unlike its compatriot competitor, Harley-Davidson, Indian is bringing in its motorcycles, the Chief Classic, the Chief Vintage and the Chieftain, through the CBU (completely built unit) route, making them significantly heavier on the pocket.
The least expensive of the lot, the Chief Classic is priced at Rs 26.5 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi), while the Chief Vintage and Chieftain can be acquired for Rs 29.5 and Rs 33 lakh, respectively (again, ex-showroom Delhi).
While definitely demanding a premium, being the first American motorcycle company (and now 113 year old) the Indian brand carries priceless heritage along with it.
So bikers in India looking to add a classic American cruiser to their garage, which packs oodles of history and retro charm, finally have something to crave for.
