Over the years, what are the changes you’ve seen in women’s fashion?
The Indian woman has become more aware over time; they’ve become more confident and are in sync with international fashion. When I started my career 15 years back, it was me, the Indian woman v/s international fashion. Today however, as women are moving forward in terms of mental, physical and emotional states, fashion is moving too as it is after all a representation of your attitude.
Your store houses your designs as well as other designers; isn’t that a clash of interest?
No, not at all. We cater to the various kinds of women here. All the designers who are available at my store have different roles; we have designs ranging from contemporary and edgy styles to feminine and simple styles with a twist; we also have international styles. We believe that the personality must overtake the garment and we make clothes accordingly.
Personally, how do you like to make a statement?
Mine is contemporary and edgy all the way. I like to accessorise my look and not go for a busy garment instead. I liked draped silhouettes, bright colours and translucent fabric but not fabric that have way too much sheen. I look for a modern silhouette, which is in sync, but modern and plain. I, then, add a bold and creative accessory to it. I usually shop from Delhi and Mumbai and different stores abroad. Bangalore is a disappointment that way.
What are you currently working on?
I’m currently working on woven fabrics like chanderi. We’re also making shirt dresses and tunics that can be teamed with jeans or worn as a dress. We have bright and summery clothes, translucent and not solid. We’re also working on net saris in bright pastel shades and have small delicate feathers and stones as part of embroidery.
What’s on your rack right now?
We have summer clothes for the day, evenings and the nights. We have clothes — both traditional and modern. We’ve got chanderis, mals and chiffons. We also have a lot of cotton wear; white dresses and checks. Graphics mixed with floral are played along with plain solid colours. Under traditional designs, we’ve got chiffon saris that are a little textured. We now have bags available at the store that are decorative and classy and are made out of pure leather from Italy. We are also launching a range of pure leather shoes.
