The Delhi-based fashion show concluded on Sunday and fashion designers planning to put up a show in Mumbai are already getting their act together for the next installment.

The dates for the Autumn/Winter showings are out and Lakme Fashion Week pulled a surprise on most by preponing the dates by a few weeks. The week will now commence in mid-August as opposed to in September.

DNA found out that most designers are wary about the upcoming fashion week as it now stands to unfold in the middle of the much dreaded Mumbai monsoons. One such designer is Pria Kataria Puri, who points out that designers will already be inundated with orders for the festival season by August.

“I think the organisers are trying to cater to the Indian market but then people will already be shopping for Ganpati festival in August — it’s like fashion weeks in the USA commencing during Christmas! Also, the monsoons in Mumbai are so unpredictable —it’s a risky move, but I’m sure the organisers must have their reasons,’ says Pria.

Designer Falguni Peacock, who has shown her creations on international platforms too vetos the move. “Mumbai monsoons can be a handful and it pulls everyone’s spirits down. Also, changing the dates so often is not recommended because designers chart their schedules for the entire year around the week’s dates,” says Falguni.

Justifying the change in schedule, Anil Chopra, CEO, Lakme Lever says that the move is an outcome of feedback they got from designers and buyers cumulatively. “The week has been advanced by a month and it’s the right thing to do for the current season format. A month’s more time gives designers added time to deliver more,” says Chopra.

Tell him that the monsoons seem to be putting off most and he combats, “This point came up when we were scouting for a date too, but it was pointed out that New York and London fashion weeks happen when it’s snowing. One has to think what’s best for business. Sure, there will be some impact in terms of traffic but not on the infrastructure front. The buyers and designers will be at the venue, so I don’t see how it will affect them,” adds Chopra.

Fashion designer Rajat Tangri, who has remained loyal to the Mumbai based week says that the change in dates don’t bother him as much as the current season format of the platform does. “The monsoon is not much of an issue because it’s an indoor event. But preponing it by a few weeks doesn’t serve the purpose to a great extent,” he concludes.
