You don’t have to make it look exactly like a film set where the leading lady descends the stairs in all her beauty — but something as dramatic or even romantic can always be achieved.
The staircase in a house can, in fact, be quite the centre of attraction if you know how to work with it. Be it winding, straight or simply ‘L’ shaped, if designed and decorated appropriately, your staircase is sure to become the most attractive feature in your house. From a range of patterns to choose from, look out for something that goes well with the entire architecture of your home and get creative by using decorative pieces in your stairways.
Entrepreneur Oum Pradutt, who has a simple yet modern stainless steel staircase at home, says, “Staircases play an important role in making your home look beautiful and lend it a character. However, make sure the design and the basic materials go well with the architecture of your home. It should also have the right colour, be durable and safe.”
Interior designer Aarti Sud says, “A stairway, apart from serving its original purpose, gives a break to the overall architecture of the home. However, one always needs to design the stairway in a manner that it doesn’t hamper the look of the house. Decide in advance where you want to place it and pick a design that will go well with the rest of the theme.”
Talking about the current trends, she says, “I think glass stairways are in vogue right now. It used to be quite popular in boutiques and other high-end centres but now, they have found a place at homes as well. Even marble stairways are a popular choice for many years.”
However, dancer Vani Ganapathy points out that modern homes don’t really require modern staircases to go along with it. “A modern home can have one antique looking piece that gives the right contrast to your home. This will act like a central piece to your home, breaking the monotony of the entire look,” she offers. She also informs that decorating the stairway is important to project the right look.
“One of my friends has decorated her staircase with ornate pieces. Even I have used bells, masks and other hanging stuff to make my staircase look nicer. With side lights, the entire stairway attracts enough attention to the guests,” says Vani.
