In its effort to strive towards the betterment of society’s lesser privileged, when Sahachari Foundation approached singer-actor Sophie Choudry, she instantly gave her nod.
A charitable trust established by a group of Mumbai women, it helps out deserving NGOs in the field of education, socio-economic upliftment, healthcare, and promotion of art and culture.
This time,the trust lends financial support to projects of Apne Aap Women’s Collective, Victoria Memorial School for the Blind and Bombay Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
And in order to fulfil their vision, a shopping extravaganza, Design One, offering the latest trends from prêt-chic to festive couture, will be held at Expo Hall, World Trade Centre, on September 8-9.
Sophie says, “It’s a very proactive group of women, independent just the way I am. When they told me about their initiative and how the proceeds would go towards helping the NGOs, I immediately agreed to help out. I visited the kids at the blind school and it was an overwhelming experience. They sang for me and I sang Babu Chhail Chhabila to them and then we all sang along. It was so much fun!”
She recalls how passionate the kids were about music. “I realised we take so much in life for granted. And here these kids were… so lively and positive,” she adds. It was a memorable day for the kids too. Between flutes, tablas, harmonium, guitars and vocals, they created a symphony of sorts.
The trust, with its shopping extravaganza, strives to encourage entrepreneurship and promote young talent while remaining committed to creating public awareness of their NGO work.
The exhibition is meant to provide a platform to designers showcasing products of 85 entrepreneurs with a range including fashion wear, accessories, jewellery, home and lifestyle products, silverware, gift items, and food.
The trust is also slated to provide free stall space to seven NGOs. As Sophie adds, “I was 12 or 13 when I was initiated into doing charity; I remember there were some 350 of us, students, who used to donate food to old people. As they say, charity begins at home, and in the UK where I’ve grown up, charity was part and parcel of my life. I really hope kids here are taught to help out the needy. It’s our duty to give back to society.”
