“I started with a shot and then my urge to consume
alcohol grew, leading me to have cannabis and brown sugar. I
became penniless, lost family and friends and started stealing money to feed my addiction. I attended de-addiction courses many times before finally managing to get hold on my life.”

The admission of Prasad Chandekar, the counsellor at Muktangan De-addiction Centre and a fitness trainer, was an eye-opener for the young audience at Fergusson College on Tuesday.

Chandekar, and others who overcame addiction, shared similar experiences at a session organised by the department of psychology on recovery from addiction under the three-day national seminar on health and well-being, concluding on Wednesday.

Chandekar, who is popularly called ‘Bandhu’ at Muktangan said, “When I realised that it was getting out of control, I attended a de-addiction course and managed to remain clean for a short period. I again took to drinking, thinking that I could handle it. Only when it became unmanageable did I realise it was a disease. Then I surrendered and made up my mind to cure this disease and save my life. Muktangan then became my home.” Chandekar is now helping others like him at Muktangan.

Madhav Kolatkar, who was successful in giving up drinking after 18 years, is now clean for more than three years and also works at Muktangan.

“It was a painful life. I became self-centred as a drinker, neglected my family, lost money and was abused by everyone. I could not see a way out and became lonely and dependent on others. It’s only when I gave up drinking that I realised what I had lost,” said Kolatkar.

Muktangan staffers, Sheetal Bedkar and Madhavi Salunke, explained the
various stages of addiction and answered queries.
