Fashion designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee is not a new name for fashion buffs. And today he will be showcasing his collection at the Lakme Fashion Week’s Spring/Summer edition. The designer from Kolkata has long been creating ripples in the Indian fashion industry and his label has been lauded in international fashion circles as well. This time around, his collection’s theme is saving the tiger.

Talking about his collection, Mukherjee says, “My collection has been developed for the project to save the tigers. It’s a modern collection using influences from rural Bengal with an animated and quirky take on the Sundarbans.” Unlike his earlier Indian garbs, this collection will see a hint of western silhouettes too. So as a designer what is the one thing he strives to use in his collection? “I make sure that I use a substantial amount of Indian textile.”

At a time when most Indian designers draw inspiration from the West, Mukherjee tells that if we do not hold on to Indian heritage, it will soon be lost forever. “We need to focus more on home grown strength.” Mukherjee himself has been working on highlighting the plight of Indian craftsmen, “Every year, I try to work with a different craft sector and incorporate their tradition into my collection. If you are an Indian designer and don’t respect indigenous craftsmen, then you are at best a wannabe.”

Mukherjee doesn’t believe in the concept of celeb showstoppers, inspite of having worked with many of them for their movies and for personal wardrobes too. “For my showstopper I always prefer a non-celeb, as my clothes are my showstoppers.”

Ask the designer one celeb he itches to design for, and he retorts, “I would love to dress Madonna, for the creativity she has and she can challenge your creativity like no one else.”

Finally ask him about his film project and a book he plans to write, and he says, “I am not aware of the book. But the film script is ready and now I am organising my business to be free to work on my film.” So will Payal (his sister) make her debut as a designer?

“Payal and I work together as a team. I manage the front end and she manages the back. But when I hang my hat, she is the one who is going to wear it,” he ends.
