Remember actor Amitabh Bachchan grooving to the Saara Zamaana…Haseeno ka Dewaana in the movie Yaraana (1981), as he dazzled the audience (literally) with his black glowy, flashy attire? While those were electric bulbs stitched to the black attire that the superstar had donned, its latest avatar is the LED T-shirt — the latest fad in the festive market.

So what are these LED tees? These are T-shirts that glow in response to sound. They come with built-in sound sensitive graphics and a fully functional electro luminescence panel with a battery pack hidden discretely in a pocket inside the T-shirt or clipped to trousers’ belt. “When music blares, the tee’s graphics move too… different music frequency activates different sections, just like an equaliser on your home stereo,” explains Kashyap Dalal, CEO of the T-shirt company, Inkfruit. “We’d launched these tees especially for Diwali, the festival of lights… to give people a chance to get innovative,” he adds.

The hot selling design in these LED T-shirts is the equaliser, reveals Stanley Jyothiraj, owner of tshirts.in. “Besides that, there are also the skull designs, graphic and abstract designs, among others,” he says. “We’ll be launching a guitar T-shirt post Diwali, with a real guitar printed on a tee and it will play the actual 13 guitar chords,” adds Stanley, who deals in three categories of LED tees — sound sensitive ones; T-shirts that glow in response to the wifi network strength; and T-shirts with music producing sound panel (like the drums/guitar tees).

Though the LED panels generally come in black, the colour of the tees can be changed on request. “Black is the most preferred colour but some even like it navy blue or white,” asserts Pakul, a city store owner. And if you still got any apprehensions, it’s time you lay them off, as these tees are reasonably priced, and can be washed like any other normal T-shirt, of course once after you’ve removed the LED panel attached to it by the velcro.
