His ideologies and policies made him the Mahatma, and the father of the nation is relevant till today. In fact, even fashion has always taken cues from his attire. Gandhi caps are the latest fad, thanks to the much-celebrated social activist Anna Hazare who made it a nation-wide rage in recent times. They are now synonymous not just with politicians and dabbawallas but also with the youth and commoners.

Says designer Azeem Khan, “The round wired frames worn by Gandhi have inspired many fashion labels. Armani has a range of round rimmed glasses and more.” He thinks they are super trendy! “Same goes for the dhoti pants. Khadi is the most amazing fabric ever… it’s natural and it’s Indian. Be it short dresses, shirts, or pants… khadi is perfect for all,” he adds.

Actor Shazahn Padamsee loves to don khadi pants. “I have lots of them in lovely colours,” she says. “Don’t be surprised if you see me sporting a Gandhi cap sometime,” she quips.

Fashion designer Krishna Mehta feels that Gandhi has always been an inspiration to people. “He endorsed khadi, which is a fabric that appeals to almost everyone today. It’s one fabric that everyone can wear without apprehensions. It is so versatile… you can wear a khadi garment for a wedding as well as for a casual occasion,” says Krishna.

“However, it’s funny because Gandhi himself never wore too many caps. It might not be a fashion statement but is definitely a people’s statement,” she adds.
