With the scorching sun shining bright outside, playing Scrabble indoors can be an excellent idea. Interestingly, the city too seems to be taken over by Scrabble fever. Recently two Scrabble championships had been organised in the city to allow anyone interested in the game to take part.

The finals for the National Scrabble Championship, 2010 organised by the Mumbai Scrabble Club and Scrabble Association of India took place on May 23 at the Chembur Gymkhana. The tournament consisted of 24 rounds and followed the Australian Draw format for the first 12 rounds and the King of the Hill format for the remaining rounds. However, another championship organised by a popular chain of coffee cafes, Scrabble 2010 is still underway and enthusiasts have the opportunity to participate.

Karun Gera, one of the organisers of the latter championship, says, “Scrabble is a fantastic way for youth and families to engage in an intellectual contest in a fun, entertaining and socially inclusive way. You may not know but Scrabble is one of the world’s largest selling word games, with over 150 million sets sold in 30 different languages across 121 countries. What better way to have an inclusive and social experience.”

Sanjay Coutinho, another organiser, says, “With the launch of the championship, we aim to create a more interactive and entertaining environment for people. We hope the contest will act as a strong platform for all Scrabble enthusiasts to play the game with all the more vigour,” he says.

The championship has started in Delhi on May 20 and will spread its wings in seven other major metros including Mumbai. The selections in Mumbai will take place between June 9 and 16, followed by the finals on June 18.
