A decade into his career, designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee from Kolkata has still been creating waves with his label, and his collections have been widely appreciated in the international fashion circles. Mukherjee is a firm believer in India's skilled labour and has been doing his bit to promote them for quite some time now.

Taking one step at a time Mukherjee will unveil his 10th year celebratory collection today at Delhi's fashion week. "The collection I present will be inspired by the paintings of three of my favourite painters namely Henri Matisse, Picasso and Paul Gauguin. The collection is sporty and retro fusing contemporary elements. Most of the silhouettes are western and structured, reflecting the '40s to '70s style," he says.

Ask Mukherjee if he believes in sponsored shows and he quips, "I am doing a sponsored show, but fortunately I have my creative independence here. But if you ask me I don't believe in sponsored shows as a designer, because then designers have to follow the diktats of the sponsors," he says.

Mukherjee doesn't like being categorised into a slot: "I am happy to be called a designer. I am happy to be born in India, which has skilled top class labour. Unfortunately, not many designers realise their worth and instead opt of technology-based work. What upsets me is that people fail to understand that buyers from Europe and America come here to buy embroidery work that is so Indian and yet so western in construction."

Ask him about his film and he stiffens a bit: "I've just finished the scripting but it is in its nascent stages." So will we see friends Rani Mukerji and Vidya Balan in his film? "I'd love to have them. In fact, I have a few ideas that I've written with them in mind. But if their dates are booked, I wouldn't want them to cancel their prior commitments. Besides I know they are always there to support me," Mukherjee concludes.
