In an effort to give art on paper its due importance, a group show has been organised that will showcase works created on paper as a medium. Priyasari Patodia, the curator of the show, says, “I agree that paper works are cheaper but it is an important medium of art. And it’s beautiful. Pablo Picasso is also known to have had an inclination towards paper as a medium.” She adds, “Paper is a delicate medium but if preserved well, it can last long. We have many old paper works in Indian museums as well as museums abroad. And one must keep in mind that if not preserved well, even a canvas painting can spoil.”

Artist Alok Bal who has worked on paper has created portraits of his friends. He says, “Paper is a very interesting surface. It is an intimate medium and one has to be very spontaneous while working it.” Another artist, Pragati Kumar has made his works on national integration. He adds, “Paper is a more comfortable medium and can be exploited in various ways.”

“It is an artist’s choice whether he wants to work on canvas or paper. And by all means, paper work should not be perceived as inferior,” asserts Priyasari. The prices of the paintings vary from Rs 15,000 to Rs 50,000.

The exhibition is on at the Priyasari art gallery till March 12.
